THE PANAMA CANAL
A cruise on the Panama Canal
The best way to visit the Panama Canal is by taking a tour on one of the canal boats for either a full or a half day transit.
Whatever you decide, it is a most fascinating and educational visit. You will see the tugging of the big container ships up close and "go along with them" into the locks.
The Panama Canal was opened in 1913 and will celebrate one hundred years of existance with a widening project that will take at least six years of construction and will bring even bigger ships through.
Partial and whole day transits
The partial transit starts either at 7.30am or at 10.00am at the Flamenco Marina on the Amador Causeway in Panama city. A bus will take the participants to the boat at the Gamboa landing above a curve in the Panama Canal called the Gaylord or Culebra Cut.
The cut is 14 kilometers long and prepares to enter the Pedro Miguel locks. Before that the boat passes underneath the new Centennial Bridge.
It is custom that several ships enter at the locks at the same time in order to shorten the wait. Entering the Pedro Miguel locks means going down 9 meters before entering the Miraflores Lake, an artificial fresh water that separates Pedro Miguel from Miraflores Locks, the latter being the final set of locks before reaching the Pacific Ocean. At Miraflores Locks the vessel is lowered 18 meters in two distinct steps.
Once on the Pacific Ocean the vessel will sail to the beautiful Flamenco Marina where passengers disembark. On the way to Flamenco, you will pass under the Bridge of the Americas, and be able to admire the Bay of Panama and Panama City's splendorous skyline.
"One can not go to Panama without seeing the Canal.
A visit to this engineering wonder is simply"a must" .
